Drug Allergies

Special tests and treatments are required for patients who are allergic to aspirin, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or other drugs. Aspirin, in particular, has been associated with nasal polyps and asthma. Desensitization involves giving patients increasing doses of a medication to impede their body’s reactions to it.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center allergy specialists offer the state’s only office-based desensitization program, eliminating the need for a multi-day hospital stay. Patients can be referred to the clinic, or they can make an appointment to be assessed.

Services

• Office-based aspirin desensitization – This process takes one to three days, depending on the patient’s response. Treatment is provided by appointment only.
• Hospital-based aspirin desensitization – Treatment is provided for those with more severe sensitization, which requires closer monitoring than available in an office setting.
